22. March 2009 Ceremony:

After the students arrived in Tres Cantos, it all began with a wonderful ceremony in the assembly hall. The students come from five different countries: Germany, UK, Spain, Belgium and Netherlands. Every country has prepaired a video for the others, to show who they are and what they expect rota to be. After it we had a great big buffet, every country brought typicall food with them.

23 March 2009 First day with ROTAnews:
Every morning we begin our workshop with a little walk around the courner, of course there we also take photos ;) for example of the landscape. At the first day with ROTAnews we learned how to make portraits and we also learned how to make double exposure photos.

24 March 2009 Experiments with light and landscape photos:
We walked around the park and took photos of the landscape. After comming back we start experimenting with light and the time of exspure time.

25 March 2009 Visiting Madrid:
All ROTA members from all wokrshops visited Madrid. At first we took a short walk around Madrid, after this we visited the famous Padro museum. Then we had a short guided tour throw the most important buildings and places in Madrid. And at least we went shopping.

26 March 2009 Experiments with black light, TV and selection of the best photos:
On Thursday we had our last lesson of photogrophy, we tried to make photos with black light. Also a famous TV channel came to the school to report about the ROTA project. In the end we had to select the best photos for the exhibition.

ROTANEWS is a workshop to experiment with audiovisual, documentation and artistic creativity.

The starting point is going to be CHANGE THE CLIMATE in order to think about what we would like to draw, paint or photography, which sounds would be interesting to record or what other levels could contribute to change the climate.

Thus it seems necessary to define what is or what could mean for each of us THE CLIMATE. We can talk about our ‘personal climate’: to think about our home environment or social, economic or political environment, about the people around us. We can search for empathy with others and think about different perspectives or even complement them.
To communicate our ideas we have different audiovisual media: drawings, photography, writing in tetralingüal texts, sound and digital recordings, etc.

Every morning during the first thirty minutes, if ‘meteorological climate’ is fine, we are going to walk to get a breath of air to our brain and get ready to start our activity.

MONDAY 23rd and TUESDAY 24th

- Walk

- Viewing of authors works: photographs (my favourite photographers), short movies, music in Spanish and spots (publicity)

We are going to use different web pages: www.google, the school web page, blogs from different departments, works from students in the arts field.

- Portraits and self-portraits
We are searching for a true smile; smiling is healing and therapeutic

- Draw, take photographs, record videos on our environment:
The play ground, central park, other workshops, Tres Cantos

- Posters about:
The climate change, the business world, sexual education, education for equality between sexes. www.consumehastamorir.com.

- Scripts for publicity spots or fiction short movies about one of the above topics.

WEDNESDAY 25th

A good opportunity to watch and look at the city. You can draw and take photographs.
Very important: You should do a security copy of all the material recorded every day once passed to the laptop.

THURSDAY 26th

- Walk
- A first selection of materials, photos, videos, etc for the final exhibition.
Taking Pictures, videos , editing

- Handling with digital files:
Storing files on themes and sessions: photographies, rounds, music copyleft, videos

- Handling of photographic files and pre-selection of the most interesting images:
For Internet, to be impressed, for an audiovisual,…

- Visit to the place where the last exhibition is going to take place
And come back to school

- Brain storming and proposals for the exhibition. Reheasals:
Rotanews with two or more interviewers, they will explain their experience (10-15mn)

FRIDAY 27th

- Walk
- Last impressions and editing , montage
Moving to the ‘theatre’ to get the final staging and montage of the exhibition.
Coming back to school and last rehearsal.

Available equipment at the Arts Department:

2 digital cameras (Photo and video)
3 digital video cameras ( MINI DVD, DVD, in hard disk)
2 computers and two laptops
Memory cards, printer
Suggested computer programmes:

Students are invited to explain the ones they know and download the free ones they could need.

In March we will be working building up a TV set. At the same time some of us will be taking photographs, videos and writing news about what is going on ROTA’S week : workshops, trips, meetings…or about news of the world during the week.
All this could be shown in the final presentation and hung up in the Net.

Students who are going to take part in the Rotanews workshop could start to work since January doing suggestions, drawing sketches and outlines about how they would like the TV set to be. They could prepare a brain storm. Therefore, I could show you how our classrooms are .

The stage we are going to work is in a large room in black and white at the back. We can use it to project digital images.

We also have in our Arts department two computers, one laptop, two digital photo cameras, a printer and two videocameras (one with a mini DVD record system and the other with DVD).

We have in the “ MULTIUSOS” classroom a stage with a black and a white backgrounds, this last is used to proyect digital images.

Surrealist photographer Brassaï ( Hungary, 1899-1984) showed in his varied Works genuine fascination with "wall language" as he himself called it. He also comments in the amusing article of Aida M. Pereda published in teh newspaper El Público ( http://www.publico.es/) last Friday November 21, some biographical facts and remarks of the autor himself which confirm this genuine oddity: "rare are the instants when we sense the flow of life palpitating with such an intense emotion that they need to be inscribed on a stone, a wall or a tree bark." I share that emotion and think that many of our students share it too or they will. To Brassaï the wall were:"shelter of all which is forbidden" which moreover " gives a voice to all who otherwise would be condemned to silence".

The article illustrates the importance of the exposition which can be visited in the Círculo de Bellas Artes of Madrid till January, 25, and which I also recommend. To me it is just an excuse to talk again about the Urba Art in the Plastic Education lessons and put forward some practice activities on the topic.

One of the few things I learnt during the last teachers’ meeting at Lincoln Christ´s Hospital School was the great interest the art teachers showed in approaching their students to the different techniques and styles of some great contemporaneous artists. In particular the students of grade 7th (11 years old) were researching in the same activity the styles of Modigliani, Picasso and Lichtenstein.

We also work with our students in the same direction in our school and it is exciting to find how much of our methodologies and activities we share in our classes in the different countries.
When I came back from Lincoln I read at a Sunday magazine a particular advertisement about Spanish wines clearly inspired in Linchtenstein´s style.

At that very moment I felt taken back to the warm art classrooms of Lincoln´s School.
More things in common: I was born in Salamanca, an important old Roman city called Helmantica. I am sure that in many of your cities, Hättingen, Lincoln... it is probably easy to find remains of the same ancestros who settle down and dominated our land.

Photography is, from my point of view, one of the great resources to talk about truth, or at least what we think it is our truth. Plato in his play Fedro , reproduces through Socrates´ the following words: “ When somebody senses the beauty of this world and evokes truly beauty (I mean, that of the world of ideas), his spirit adquires wings and longs for flying....Among all kinds of excitement, this fourth kind of delirium is the most magnificient in its causes and effects”. Photography approaches us to truth as well as beauty.

1 INTRODUCTION / PRESENTACIÓN.

My name is Ricardo Cordero, I'm an arts teacher at the I.E.S. Pintor Antonio Lopez in Tres Cantos, a town near Madrid. It's possible that next March 2009 I'll be the leader of the workshop "Rotanews" on the project of Rota.The first thing before explaining what we are going to do in the workshop "Rotanews", I consider important to explain you what Rota means for me as personal and professional experience.Rota is an important event for meeting new people from different European countries.

And I think that it will be great to invite to this Web-site the students, teachers, parents, etc who have taken part in Rota other years, to show their experience in different media (audio, video, texts, photographs...).I started with this project in 2006, when Ricardo Rodero, a music teacher at our school, gave me the opportunity to participate in a previous edition of this program in Hättingen, Germany.

Of course, the most important thing, is to invite all the pupils that have chosen this workshop to send images, texts and videos to our email address:epviespal@hotmail.com, to get to know each other and to favour our pupils to partly know who we are and what things we want to learn.

I would like to thank all the people who are helping me in this project: teachers like Marga López, Ricardo Rodero, Carlos Bravo, Marisa Hortelano... and students like Aurora Torres, Laura Marcos, David Espinel...I suppose this list will be growing till March 2009.
